Windsor job fair overwhelmed by unemployed - Invest Windsor Ontario Real Estate

April 15, 2010

WINDSOR, Ont. — About 1,500 people lined up for a chance at fewer than 100 jobs Wednesday -- a sign that despite hope of economic recovery, city residents are still struggling to find work.

Hundreds waited for up to two hours to submit applications and snag an interview for one of about 75 positions at a new rental retirement residence.

When Vancouver-based Amica Mature Lifestyles opens its 11-storey, 181-unit building at Riverside Drive and Pillette Road in July, the company will need registered practical nurses, personal support workers, cooks, wellness co-ordinators, housekeepers, concierges and other employees.

Nancy Labombard attended the job fair with a view to landing a server position. She said she was a little discouraged by the number of people joining her in the queue. "I would like to think I'm going to get a call, but you never know. Because there are so many people, I'm unsure, I have to say."

Robert Tymec is already employed, but said he attended the job fair simply to keep his options open.

"I'm just seeing what else is out there. If I get something, great, if not, well, it was a half- hour of my life. I'll live."

One applicant who didn't want his name published had a realistic outlook on his chances. "I'm as hopeful as anyone else," he said. "You want to keep the fire burning, but the truth is, it's not a good state that we're in. If there's 2,000 people that come out and they need 50 employees, it's not hard to do the numbers."

The company's vice-president of human resources Marie McCammont said she anticipated a steady trickle of job hopefuls, but didn't expect the flood that appeared on Tuesday and Wednesday. "It was on one hand absolutely wonderful. On the other hand, it was also very sad because there were a number of people unemployed, looking for a job, people who have two or three part-time jobs and are looking for a full-time job. It's a clear indication of what's happening in Windsor."

Retired University of Windsor business Prof. Alfie Morgan said the response from job-hungry Windsorites shouldn't come as a surprise. "It's expected that you'd find so many people showing up for so few jobs," he said. "The situation is rather desperate. It's a bad sign."
