With a recovery in endowment and investment income and higher than projected enrolment, the University of Windsor is looking at a balanced budget by the end of the year.
Penny Allen, chairwoman of the university's resource allocation committee, told a board of governors meeting Tuesday that the school is on target to balance its $210-million budget for 2009-2010, a scenario that had not been foreseen months ago when a $3-million deficit was expected.
University president Alan Wildeman said full-time enrolment for the current year has exceeded projections with 170 more students attending classes, bringing the total number to 12,932. Student academic fees are projected at $96 million. Government grants, federal and provincial, represent $105 million. The review also found that revenue had increased by $3.3 million.
But there was one area of concern in the enrolment figures, Wildeman said. While the overall number is up, the university failed to meet its projected enrolment of first-year students, missing the mark by about 100 students.
