High-tech lab moves to Windsor Ontario core
February 11, 2010
An institute for high-tech research that will open in a few weeks is bringing researchers and students from the University of Windsor into the city's core.
Located in a former office supply store on University Avenue West at Caron Avenue, more than two dozen researchers at the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research will work on a variety of projects with industrial, medical, security and military applications. It was located on campus.
Most are the brainchild of Roman Maev, a University of Windsor physics professor who established the institute 12 years ago. He also established Tessonics, a partnership with Chrysler which manufactures hand-held acoustic imaging devices that gauge the quality of spot welding.
Use of the device has already saved the automaker more than $40 million.
"We're working on breakthrough projects here with our priorities being in the biomedical and biometric sectors," said Maev, who was awarded a $5-million grant to help fund the institute two years ago.
