Traffic tieups mean jobs in Windsor Ontario

According to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, every $1 million spent on heavy road and sewer construction work these days creates at least 11.1 jobs.

By that measure the $133 million worth of federal stimulus projects which are slated to kick off in Windsor next week will create 1,476 new jobs. They won't come a moment too soon for all the construction companies trying to stay solvent since the work dried up.

As The Star's Doug Schmidt reported this week, thanks to Ottawa's stimulus program, 2010 is going to be by far the busiest heavy construction year in the region's history.

By June, when most of several dozen projects should be underway within the City of Windsor, the people who look for things to complain about will be able to find delays, detours and frustration at every turn.

Not me. I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes seeing construction, even when we don't desperately need the jobs. I'll drive miles out of my way to see an interesting project. Heck, who am I kidding? I'll go see anything under construction.

So my kind will be in their glory in 2010. Portions of half of the city's major arteries are going to be torn up: Pelissier, Riverside, Tecumseh, Lauzon, Provincial, Banwell, Wyandotte, Walker in two locations. The wailing from people who can't stand detours will be pitiful...
