The candy-striped riverfront stage dubbed the "onion" is toast after city council Monday night approved a $2-million permanent performance stage at the festival plaza in front of Caesars Windsor.
Following a pair of public open houses on the project, council tweaked the design by requesting that an additional "baffle wall" be erected between the new stage and Riverside Drive.
Coun. Percy Hatfield asked whether festivals and concerts at the new facility would be noisier for adjacent downtown residents than what has been the case with the existing onion stage.
"Absolutely not," replied parks and facility operations executive director Don Sadler.
To further reassure critics, however, Sadler agreed with a resident's proposal for a sound baffle wall on the stage's south side between the new stage and Riverside Drive.
Tony Walker, who represents the residents' association of a nearby 300-unit highrise, said the occupants of the building have been "bedevilled by noise" since the onion went up and that the original concept shown of the permanent replacement depicted sound barrier walls on either side of the stage. Sadler said the riverside baffle was removed to open the "fabulous" Detroit view to the stage entertainers...
