Chrysler's Windsor Assembly Plant will soon be up to full speed -- after putting on the brakes because some feeder plants couldn't keep up -- as demand for the locally built minivan continues to boom.
The CAW said consumer demand after Chrysler came out of bankruptcy caught feeder plants off guard, while a company representative said the job-saving trend has set Windsor's plant apart from most others in Canada.
"The minivan here in Canada has essentially been flying off the shelves," said Chrysler Canada spokeswoman Mary Gauthier.
"Minivan sales have been really hot.
"It's just proven to be an extremely popular vehicle.
"As a result of the demand being so high, we retained that third shift at Windsor, which had been scheduled to be dropped. There aren't that many plants here in Canada that are running at three shifts. I'm not sure who else is, but it's fairly rare for an assembly plant to be running at three shifts."
Rick Laporte, president of CAW Local 444, said Chrysler cut back production more than a month ago to 1,226 minivans a day. On Dec. 7, he said the plant will ramp up again to 1,426 vehicles a day...
